Work: Branding, uniform design

Sports were my first love, and what got me into design in high school – learning how to design logos on free vector programs and posting them on message boards for critiques. I still dabble in them today and like to flex my branding muscles by creating looks inspired by the 60’s and 70’s for teams real and fictional.

Swing City Softball

I had the opportunity to completely rebrand our men’s rec softball team in Austin, Swing City. With a generic name, we opted to go with an armadillo theme (since we’re all old and out of shape).

The primary logo is an armadillo forming a softball, with a hidden base right in the middle. The secondary is more straightforward, with the lines on the armadillo mirrored in the stripes on the jersey and the identity as a whole.

Getting over a dozen middle-aged men to agree on one look was no easy task, but we finally settled on navy and gold with a pop of red to bring some color into it. In a league filled with sublimated skulls and military camo jerseys, our traditional look certainly stands out.

Austin FC

A “what if? concept for my home team. Austin FC was an expansion team in Major League Soccer in 2021, and since then I’ve gone to nearly every game. I wanted to imagine what they’d look like if they had existed in the 70’s, with simple verde & black stripes throughout for “The Oaks.”

Austin Bats

What if Austin had an MLB team? That’s the premise for this concept, using a nickname that makes too much sense not to use – the Bats! Austin has the largest urban bat colony in the world. The purple draws from the city’s famous violet crown sunsets, and completing weird Austin’s secondary color palette for their sports teams (Austin FC – green, UT Longhorns – orange).

USA Soccer

Giving the USA national soccer team a retro rebrand, with a USA monogram and embracing the stars and stripes. The sash on the jersey harkens back to the classic mid-century look the team had and brought back again in 2006, also paying homage to the soaring ball logo they had throughout the 90’s and 2000’s.
